Louis C K produced and sold-direct-online his own Stand Up Video. Fred Wilson covers the idea. The business model of going direct to the fans is powerful, it has none of the negative issues of the existing business model (like fucking with the architecture of the net in a naive attempt to quell piracy) and is going to work bigtime. Thanks Louis CK for shining on a huge bright light on that fact for the past couple weeks. (SOPA) (more)
Having disrupted the traditional concert DVD distribution system with his ground-breaking DRM-free $5 download video, comedian Louis C K is now preparing to go on tour and he's going to cut out all the sleazy ticket brokers slimy scalpers, and other middle-men, and sell the tour tickets direct to fans. Tickets are a flat $45 each. He says he'll make less than he would if he went with an expensive ticketing service, but he wants to make his shows affordable. (more)

*In news that seems to be well understood in the Sakai community but not elsewhere, Sakai founding members the University of Michigan and Indiana University have collectively decided to pause investment in the SaKai Open Academic Environment (OAE) project - formerly known as Sakai 3. Most institutions working with Sakai are using the Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE), formerly known as Sakai 2 - think of CLE as an enterprise LMS like Blackboard or Desire2 Learn. Sakai OAE is a next-generation learning platform based on learner-center, collaboration design originally released as version 1.0 in September 2011. I cannot think of a direct comparison to OAE in a commercial offering, but that is part of the difference. CLE is essentially an evolutionary approach to the LMS, whereas OAE is a revolutionary approach to a learning platform based on different use cases. The Michigan and Indiana decision affects their participation in OAE but does not change their participation in CLE... In an earlier email, representatives from the University of Michigan and Indiana University notified several peer institutions, stating that “the last six months appear to signal some important shifts that merit a fresh lens on all options for LMS successors”. The CUNY Academic Commons is an online, academic Social Network for faculty, staff, and graduate students of the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Designed to foster conversation, collaboration, and connections among the 23 individual colleges that make up the university system,[1] the site, founded in 2009, has quickly grown as a hub for the CUNY community, serving in the process to strengthen a growing group of digital scholars, teachers, and open-source projects at the university. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CUNY_Academic_Commons (more)
The CUNY Academic Commons is proud to announce the establishment of The Commons In A Box, a new Open Source project that will help other organizations quickly and easily install and customize their own Commons platforms...Over the past two years, the CUNY Academic Commons has been lauded for its creation of a robust academic social network that connects faculty members, administrators, and graduate students across the diverse twenty-three colleges in the City University of New York system. Built on the popular open-source platforms Word Press, Buddy Press, and MediaWiki, the network has cultivated a strong sense of community among its members by providing public and private spaces in which they can connect to one another and share their academic and administrative work. As the project has progressed, the development team of the Cuny Academic Commons has regularly shared its own work with the wider Word Press community, releasing highly rated extensions that have been downloaded over 100,000 times. Permission marketing is a term popularized by Seth Godin[1] (but found earlier [2]) used in marketing in general and e-marketing specifically. The undesirable opposite of permission marketing is Interruption Marketing (e.g. Advertising). Marketers obtain permission before advancing to the next step in the purchasing process. For example, they ask permission to send email newsletters to prospective customers.[3] It is mostly used by online marketers, notably email marketers and search marketers, as well as certain direct marketers (Direct Marketing) who send a catalog in response to a request. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Permission_marketing
